The Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology has common equipment for use by anyone in the department. This list changes occasionally, but we currently support the following items.

Optima L-100 K Centrifuge: Beckman Coulter's Optima L Series Ultracentrifuges enable you to perform more separations in less time. Perfect for applications such as high-purity plasmid DNA, subcellular particles and virus isolations, this versatile floor model operates with a broad range of superb rotors, including zonal and continuous flow for large-volume separations. 

New Brunswick Scientific Excella™ E25/E25R Temperature-Controlled Console Shaker The Excella® E-25R Classic Refrigerated Incubator Shaker is a large capacity shaker utilizing a UniCentric single eccentric counterbalanced drive to provide horizontal plane rotary motion in a 2.54 cm (1 in) circular orbit. A Proportional/Integral (PI) Microprocessor controller with instantaneous digital feedback controls the speed over a range of 50-400 rpm. The E-25R provides temperature control over a range of 15°C below ambient (minimum 4°C) to 60°C. Ambient temperature is defined as the temperature within one meter of the shaker.

StepOne Real-Time PCR System The Applied Biosystems® StepOne™ Real-Time PCR System offers intuitive software, Fast (<40 min) and standard (<2 hr) runs, and are configured for PC-free or networked operation. These factory-calibrated systems make it easy to step up to high-performance qPCR. This system supports high resolution melt (HRM) software.

Nikon Ti-S Inverted Microscope The Eclipse Ti-S Inverted Research Microscope is Nikons entry level research microscope with the basic model offering two built-in imaging ports that can be dedicated to specific tasks. This microscope is an excellent starting building block for many research applications. The Eclipse Ti-S uses Nikon’s world-famous CFI60 optical system and a wide choice of objectives for bright field, dark field, fluorescence, phase contrast, DIC and modulation contrast microscopy techniques.

Synergy H1™ Multi-Mode Reader The H1 is a flexible monochromator-based multi-mode microplate reader that can be turned into a high-performance patented Hybrid system with the addition of a filter-based optical module. The monochromator optics uses a third generation quadruple grating design that allows working at any excitation or emission wavelength with a 1 nm step. This system supports top and bottom fluorescence intensity, UV-visible absorbance and high performance luminescence detection. It is the ideal system for all the standard microplate applications found in life science research laboratories.

Leica CM1850 Cryostat  The Leica CM1850 cryostat design incorporates emphasis on power savings, increased efficiency and operator safety. The result is a versatile cryostat with an optimized cooling system, rapid specimen freezing and smooth specimen orientation for the high-quality sectioning demanded in routine histology and clinical pathology.

Avanti J-26XP  The Avanti J- 26XP is a fast, efficient centrifugation solution uniquely designed to process up to 6 liters in less than 10 minutes.

Seahorse XFp Extracellular Flux Analyzer For scientists seeking to understand the role of energy metabolism in their disease model, the XFp Extracellular Flux Analyzer provides functional metabolic data to verify gene expression changes or provide a phenotype using only a few thousand live cells. The XFp Analyzer, with the patented six-well XFp Miniplate, easily performs gold-standard XF assays (XF Cell Energy Phenotype Test, XF Cell Mito Stress Test and XF Glycolysis Stress Test) on small sample sets.

MicroCal PEAQ-ITC is designed for ease-of-use and exceptional sensitivity. The system directly measures heat released or absorbed during biochemical binding events, from which it calculates binding affinity (KD), stoichiometry (n), enthalpy (ΔH), and entropy (ΔS).

In addition to departmental common equipment, there are various core laboratories on campus.

Provides technical expertise and assistance in conducting experiments employing various rodent cardiovascular disease models for generating physiological data or for testing experimental compounds, molecules, cells or devices.

Chemical Genomics Core Facility — Zhong-Yin Zhang, PhD, director
Provides investigators with cost-effective access to high throughput screening of structurally-diverse, drug-like small molecules in biological assays to enable investigators to discover small molecule tools for basic research, therapeutic development and diagnostic applications.

Clinical Pharmacology Analytical Core — David R. Jones, PhD, director
The Analytical Core provides services to 1) assist in the quantification of drugs and/or metabolites, 2) identification of metabolites, and 3) pharmacokinetic analysis of data.

Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Service Core — Lang Li, PhD, director
This core, a service unit of the Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, provides biomedical data management, informatic and analytical consulting, graphic and website design, and software and website hosting.
